Of War and Sunflowers/ О войне и подсолнечниках

In my 33 years of existence, I would have never imagined that I'll write about war. But here we are. Day 6 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. No, this is not a "conflict", "issue", or some sort of "special operation", this is a full fledged WAR that is costing human lives as I am writing these lines. Because I know that large part of my readers are from Russia, I decided to translate this post to Russian as well, via DeepL, as the level of my Russian is less than mediocre. So, my dear readers, let's talk about war that was never supposed to happen.

За 33 года своего существования я никогда бы не подумала, что буду писать о войне. Но вот мы здесь. Шестой день российского вторжения в Украину. Нет, это не "конфликт", не "проблема", не какая-то "спецоперация", это полноценная война, которая стоит человеческих жизней, пока я пишу эти строки. Поскольку я знаю, что большая часть моих читателей из России, я решила перевести этот пост и на русский язык, через DeepL, так как уровень моего русского далеко не посредственный. Итак, мои дорогие читатели, давайте поговорим о войне, которой никогда не должно было быть.

I grew up in a post-soviet country and quite early in my childhood I got to understand that I am living far from the safest place in the world, as the history of my country demonstrates. Russia was always a looming threat, even though we have only a small direct border with the Kaliningrad Oblast which currently belongs to Russia. We, Lithuanians, always knew how quickly the situation can change to worse when you have a neighbor that almost every century tries to expand its borders. As well as the cost of this kind of ambitions, when the entire generation is killed, deported, or forced into submission. However, quite often in the eyes of other countries we might have looked a bit paranoid, especially when things involved Russia (or Belarus), because our politicians would advice West to be cautious and monitor the situation closely. However, this advice was rarely taken. Lots of chances to turn the current events the other way are now long gone. And Ukraine is paying the price.

Я выросла в постсоветской стране и довольно рано поняла, что живу далеко не в самом безопасном месте в мире, о чем свидетельствует история моей страны. Россия всегда была нависшей угрозой, несмотря на то, что у нас есть лишь небольшая прямая граница с Калининградской областью, которая сейчас принадлежит России. Мы, литовцы, всегда знали, как быстро ситуация может измениться в худшую сторону, когда у тебя есть сосед, который почти каждый век пытается расширить свои границы. А также цену подобных амбиций, когда целое поколение погибает, депортируется или принуждается к покорности. Тем не менее, довольно часто в глазах других стран мы могли выглядеть немного параноиками, особенно когда дело касалось России (или Беларуси), потому что наши политики советовали Западу быть осторожными и внимательно следить за ситуацией. Однако этот совет редко выполнялся. Много шансов повернуть текущие события в другую сторону уже давно упущено. И Украина расплачивается за это.

If you are Russian and you're reading these lines, please know that your country is waging a war against your neighbor, Ukraine. Under false pretenses, with "arguments" that are obviously lies, they try to justify their actions, as the military bombard the cities and kill innocent civilians. There are heavy sanctions implemented on Russia right now and you all will feel the consequences. Not because you are Russians and everybody is against you, as your state-sponsored media might put it, but because of your country's leaders, them and them alone. Their decisions cost you your comfort. In Ukraine, these decisions cost human lives. There are protests against the war that are happening in Russia, however there's not enough people to overwhelm the authorities.

Если вы россиянин и читаете эти строки, знайте, что ваша страна ведет войну против своего соседа, Украины. Под ложным предлогом, с помощью "аргументов", которые являются очевидной ложью, они пытаются оправдать свои действия, в то время как военные бомбят города и убивают невинных гражданских лиц. Сейчас против России введены жесткие санкции, и вы все почувствуете их последствия. Не потому, что вы русские и все против вас, как могут сказать ваши государственные СМИ, а из-за лидеров вашей страны, их и только их. Их решения стоили вам комфорта. В Украине эти решения стоят человеческих жизней. В России происходят протесты против войны, но людей недостаточно, чтобы одолеть власти.

The internet is full of videos from the warzone, from sites that are bombarded by all sorts of lethal military equipment. People are suffering and dying, second largest Ukrainian city Kharkiv is being destroyed, and its survivors are on the verge of humanitarian crisis. The capital, Kyiv is preparing for attacks as the large convoy is approaching and "The Russian defence ministry warned residents of Kyiv that it was preparing to hit targets in the capital" (BBC). Just watch the United Nations General Assembly Emergency Special Session that took place on February 28th, where Ukrainian ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya stated that, "for the first time since the United Nations was born, there is a full-fledged war in the center of Europe. <...> Everyone in this world knows that Russia, and Russia alone, started this invasion, now facilitated by Belarus. This war was not provoked. It was chosen by someone who is now sitting in the bunker. We know what happened to the person who sat in the bunker in Berlin in May 1945. <...> Next to every name of every single country in this Assembly. 30 plus killed Russian soldiers. Hundreds of killed Ukrainians, dozens of killed children, and it goes on, and on, and on".

Интернет полон видеороликов из зоны боевых действий, с мест, которые подвергаются обстрелу всевозможной смертоносной военной техникой. Люди страдают и умирают, второй по величине украинский город Харьков разрушен, а его выжившие жители находятся на грани гуманитарного кризиса. Столица, Киев, готовится к атакам, поскольку приближается большой конвой, и "Министерство обороны России предупредило жителей Киева, что готовится нанести удары по целям в столице" (BBC). Просто посмотрите чрезвычайную специальную сессию Генеральной Ассамблеи ООН, которая состоялась 28 февраля, где украинский посол Сергей Кислица заявил, что "впервые с момента рождения Организации Объединенных Наций в центре Европы идет полноценная война. <...> Все в этом мире знают, что Россия, и только Россия, начала это вторжение, которому сейчас способствует Беларусь. Эта война не была спровоцирована. Она была выбрана кем-то, кто сейчас сидит в бункере. Мы знаем, что случилось с человеком, который сидел в бункере в Берлине в мае 1945 года. <...> Рядом с каждым названием каждой страны в этой Ассамблее. 30 с лишним убитых русских солдат. Сотни убитых украинцев, десятки убитых детей, и это продолжается, и продолжается, и продолжается".

Russian citizens, your people, those young guys and men are dying for one man's ambitions in a foreign land. Demand to send them back, or you probably wouldn't see them ever again, as the bodies of your dead soldiers pile up and Russia does not claim them back. There's lots of misinformation now and you might "know" why this war (a.k.a. "special operation") is happening, but please read this Facebook post by Pavlo Morkovkin for some context.

Граждане России, ваши люди, эти молодые парни и мужчины умирают за амбиции одного человека на чужой земле. Требуйте отправить их обратно, иначе, возможно, вы их больше никогда не увидите, так как тела ваших погибших солдат громоздятся, а Россия не требует их вернуть.
